For several years, in his early sixties, the creator of this website, Loran Joly, dealt with cancer. It was not the most serious of cancers, but it consumed his life. Fifteen physicians were involved, and innumerable tests. He was concerned that it had gone to his bloodstream, because the symptoms were severe...
For those two years, he had to wear Depends undergarments, due to the loss of bowel functions.

The day before surgery, he did not have the requisite
co-pay money to provide, at the medical office. Another
patient in the office overheard this, and pulled out
their wallet and handed him sixty dollars,
to cover the treatment the next day,
or he would not have been able to go through
with the procedure.

The cancer was resolved a few years ago.
He is now sixty-four.

During this period, he also experienced vision
problems. For over a year, he could not
drive more than an hour at a time.
Two surgeons were all set to cut on his eyes.
He started a GoFundMe site
to seek help, as he does extensive
photography work.

The costs involved sent him into
declaring bankruptcy,
and he moved to subsidized housing,
where he lived for the next two years,
until several meth labs were discovered
in his apartment complex, and he
evacuated, having to take out
expensive loans to cover the costs,
while helping his 85-year-old mother
at the same time, with no other
family members within four hundred miles.
To this day, he receives at least
five calls a day
from bill collectors.

Jim Roach, M.D., was one of the physicians who provided assistance for the treatment.

As Roger Ebert dealt with cancer,
he "poured himself into tweeting, posting to Facebook, and blogging...

He ripped out posts at a breakneck speed,

writing thousands and thousands of words about everything he could think of ...

Ebert knew his time on this planet was short, and he wanted to share everything he could in the time he had left. "Mr. Ebert writes as if it were a matter of life and death ... 'because it is'."
